| "Junkanoo":
Is a cultural festival unique to the Bahamas. Popular
history says the annual celebrations on Boxing Day and
New Year's Day began when slaves were given this as
their only holiday of the year. They celebrated their
"freedom" by making wonderful music with goatskin
drums, cowbells, whistles and conch shell horns and
by dressing up in whatever was available to them to
make a "costume". |
|
Junkanoo
today: Is alive and a live history played out every
year on Boxing and New Years Day when thousands of
members of various Junkanoo groups parade on foot
through downtown Nassau in a fantastic celebration
of music and lavish costumes, The costumes are wonderfully
elaborate multi-coloured pieces all lovingly handmade
and visually stunning a whole evolution away from
their ancestors' paper and sacking.
